Jeff Zbar is the Chief Home Officer and creator of Home Office Highway. On his three-week "workation" this summer, he toured the American East to reveal how one entrepreneur can work and play in that place where Vocation Meets Vacation on the open road (learn more at www.homeofficehighway.com). He also found time to visit Walden and send his thoughts about his time there to Shedworking:Almost all writers are work-at-homers. Some, like me, write from an erstwhile bedroom-turned-home office. Dates on Blog Posts - Should You Have Them?

Last week in my post exploring how to make blogs sticky I suggested (in point 14) that one technique to consider is to remove the dates from your blog posts. My theory is that dates can either add to or take away from a post. Let me explore this a little further: When you put a date on a post you signal to your reader when the post was written. This is useful to readers wanting to make a judgment on how relevant the post is for them at any point of time. It signals to them that a post is

Once upon a time...PR with a passionate heart

Isabelle Allende opens her TED talk with a favorite Jewish saying, "What is truer than truth? Answer: The story." Now, isn't that the truth! The longer I practice public relations, the more I realize I was born into this career. Here, I thought I had stumbled into my profession because the university program for museum curatorship was unavailable. No, I was born as a storyteller and this has become my number one asset as a public relations professional. So why isn't storytelling taught in u

Patch management approaches using decent CSM

Following Ayende's post on Patch management approaches using centralized SCM, here are how I would have dealt with the 4 issues that he brings up, using a Decentralised SCM. ? Note that I haven't used patches on git development as until now all of my git work was on repositories I had write access to, However the principals are the same (i.e. - all of the tree is local to my machine, thus I can reach

Print Journalism Officially a Crisis, or, Put Your Hand in the Hand of Your Strongest Competitor?

Maybe just to make it all official, a recent study was conducted on the effects that recent layoffs and budgets cuts are having on the country's newsrooms (spoiler alert: it's bad). The study concluded that newsrooms are smaller despite a greater online need for content, there is less foreign news now than there was three years ago (Lara Logan fans will already be aware of this), and there is even less national news (though as New Yorkers one wonders how long it would take for us to notice th

Over the past few decades, school teachers have been embracing a number of electronic technologies for use in the classroom. Computers are now prevalent; overhead projectors are being replaced with dynamic teaching tools such as data projection, electronic whiteboards, and video media. Jessica Simpson Getting "Fancy" with Her New Perfume

Fans of Jessica Simpson will get two-for-one soon, as she's set to launch her new perfume called "Fancy," to coincide with her debut country music album "Do You Know?" In her advertising she's draped in a pink silk bed sheet, while laying on a bed threading her fingers through her hair. One story says she was inspired by actress and pin-up girl Brigitte Bardot. That's interesting in that the two are probably opposites in their personal views on a lot of things. What I like about it is Simpson

Value Creation And New Tech Ventures

I read Paul Graham's list of ideas Y Combinator would like to fund and I couldn't help but come away a little unfulfilled. Paul admits that it's not a complete list but I don't like the way the list has the potential to limit an entrepreneur's frame of thinking. Better dating, better craigslist, better ebay, etc. are all compelling ideas, but they are value capture plays. In my opinion, the big home runs were predominately value creation plays that looked at secular variations and built com

The Definition of "Unified Communications" (Revisited)

The other day I wrote a post about unified communications, and how I feel the term "Unified Communications" (UC) is in danger of becoming too fuzzy to be practically useful. While anecdotal evidence suggests that the term is gaining momentum at incredible speed, I noted that its definition seems to be becoming muddied in direct correlation with its popularity. Don Price does a good job of summing up my view on this topic: "It is interesting and I tend to agree in a perverse way [that] just ab

Gspace stores data in the cloud with your unused Gmail capacity

Last time I checked, I had roughly 6939.765312 megabytes of storage for my Gmail. No wait, it's 6939.765328... er, 6939.765341. OK, I give up since it increases every second. Let's try this again. Last time I checked, I had close to seven gigabytes of storage for my Gmail. I only use a quarter of it, so why not gain some free storage space for data? There's a number of tools out there to do this, but Joel turned me on to the Gspace extension for Firefox so I could keep everything integrated

Lessons from WALL-E

As the father of an (absolutely adorable) baby girl, I don't get to go to the theater much. Though I hope my little girl doesn't grow up too fast, I'm looking forward to the time when I can take her to the movie and not have to worry about whether she can sit through the entire thing. As such, I've never seen Pixar's latest movie, WALL-E, but today I read an interesting review that got me thinking about the way today's Web tools allow us to communicate without the closeness that personal cont

Moopz Merges Fragmented FriendFeed Conversations Into One Place

It used to be that if a user posted a link on FriendFeed, they would get a few comments and likes and that would be it.
